Here is a list of things that you can do to improve your voice. These tips will help make your voice deeper, improve it’s clarity, and it’s projection:

• Get plenty of sleep - If you do not get enough sleep, your voice will sound hoarse, will crackle, and will generally be higher than normal.  Aim for at least 7 hours of quality sleep each night to ensure your voice is at peak performance.

• Eat a healthy diet - Yes, your diet can affect the sound of your voice.  Eat fruits and vegetables to provide your body with vitamins and antioxidants, and proteins to help keep the muscles and tissue in the voice box strong.

• Avoid Yelling - Yelling is not good for your vocal cords.  You’ve probably experienced what yelling can do to your voice the morning after a concert or sporting event.  Prolonged yelling causes damage to your vocal cords that can become permanently damaged (have you ever heard the rock band AC/DC?).

• Be confident - Just feeling confident while you speak will really improve the sound of your voice.  Keep your chin up and mean what you say when you speak!

• Use your diaphragm when you speak - This is a particularly good way to make your voice sound deeper and more assertive.  When you are speaking, keep your chin up and use the muscles in your lower abdomen to project your voice.  Singers learn to use their diaphragm to really get the most out of their voice.

Group #1

Those that require voice deepening surgery, or medication.   There are only a handful of men that fall into this category.  These are usually individuals that have either sustained damage to their vocal cords or throat, or those that have unusually low levels of the hormone testosterone.

Group #2

Those that have no vocal cord damage and normal testosterone levels, and simply need to perform training exercises for the voice box and vocal cords.  Fortunately, the vast majority of men fall into this category.

So which group do you fit in to?

If your voice is always high, you may fall into group #1.  In this case you should consult a physician and have him examine your vocal cords to ensure there is no damage.  Also have him test your testosterone levels to make sure they are not too low.

If you suffer from low testosterone levels, hormone replacement therapy may be in order.  Normally in this case you would take pills to regulate your testosterone which in turn will make your voice deep again.

If there are occasions where your voice is deep (like when you are sick for example), then you fall into group #2.

Many individuals that fit in to group #2 find that when the wake up in the morning their voice is deeper.  This is another indication that surgery is not necessary and you do have other options to make your voice deep.

You see, you don’t necessarily need pitch lowering surgery or medical procedures to achieve a baritone voice.  Simple exercises that manipulate the vocal cords can help you achieve an impressive, deep baritone voice in many cases.  These exercises train the vocal cords, and can result in permanent results if executed correctly and consistently.

It’s is very important that you learn vocal cord manipulation techniques from an expert, since you can actually do damage to your voice if you do not pay close attention to what you are doing.

First and foremost, I am not a fan of invasive surgeries anywhere on the body.  I like to go by the moto “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”… I do understand however that some of you out there are desperate to make your voice deep, and are willing to try just about anything (including voice deepening surgery) if it works.  So I did a little research on various medical methods that are available that can help you achieve a lower voice.

There are two medical procedures that I came across that can make the voice deeper.  One is an actual surgery, while the other is an injection in to the vocal cords.

Here is more information on each procedure:

1)  Pitch lowering Surgery - This involves removing a segment of cartilage from the voice box.  The removal of this cartilage loosens the vocal folds, thus producing a lower pitch in your voice.

Benefits - Permanent results.

Drawbacks - Extremely invasive, risk of permanent voice damage, very costly.

2)  Fat injection thyroplasty - This is a less invasive medical method that involves injecting fat tissue from another part of your body directly in to the vocal folds.  Ultimately this method helps achieve a better “laryngeal closure”. Benefits: Less invasive than surgery, results can be impressive.

Drawbacks: Not permanent (you need to keep getting injections), expensive.

As you can see, if you are seriously considering voice deepening surgery, or any voice deepening medical procedure, you have lots to think about.  All medical pitch lowering methods are going to be very costly, and there are always some serious risks involved.

In this article I wanted to outline the different methods that can help you achieve a lower voice.  The three methods below will permanently lower your voice.

1. Testosterone injections - Some men may have low levels of testosterone in their body, and it is this lack of testosterone that is the culprit for the lack of a low voice.  In these rare cases it may be necessary to take hormone pills or injections.  Once normal testosterone levels are achieved, the voice will naturally become lower.
2. Voice deepening surgery - There are medical procedures that involve modifying the voice box that can help you achieve a lower voice.  Unfortunately these methods are very costly, invasive, and rarely worth the risk involved.  Having voice box surgery would should only be considered if no other methods have lowered your voice.
3. Voice training & conditioning - This is the easiest and least invasive voice lowering method, and is the only method that the majority of you should ever consider. Voice training & conditioning involves special exercises for the voice box and vocal cords.  Since the voice box is a group of muscles, it can be trained to sound lower and deeper.

The great news is that very few of you will need testosterone treatment, and even fewer will need surgery.  At least 95% of you will be able to achieve outstanding voice lowering results simply by learning how to train and condition your vocal cords and voice box.

Training the vocal cords and voice box is fairly easy.  It does take some time and practice, but no one ever said it would be easy, right?
